Region

The mountainous countryside in this region is called "Beskid Sadecki". It is part of the Carpathian mountain range. The Beskid Sadecki are split in half by the fast-flowing river Poprad. This river and mountain countryside is a conservation area. That is why nature, the peace and quiet and the way of life are unspoilt over here.

The mountains serve as a perfect place for summer tourism as well as winter sports. Lots of people spend their summer holidays hiking or cycling in the mountains. Local people enjoy the mountains as a spot for long weekends away. Winter tourism is very well developed: there are three major ski resorts: Szczawnica-Jaworki, Krynica Zdrój and Piwniczna Zdrój with its three skiing centres. In springtime this area offers attractive opportunities to lovers of wild water sports and angling: the rivers are populated with salmon and trout.

The city of Kraków is a mere 100 km from here. Kraków is one of the most picturesque and classic cities of Europe, with breathtaking architecture and fascinating history. Close by are the salt mines of Wielicka: a cultural heritage monument listed by UNESCO. Also close by is the city of Oswiecim, better known by its German name Auschwitz.

This part of the Polish mountains is also renowned for its wooden buildings and architecture, ranging from dwellings to classical orthodox churches. Special trails take you to these fine old buildings.
